Problem : Windows Vista(x64) does not allow sharing domain printer which is attached to Windows 2003 domain(x32).
Environment: Windows Vista Home Premium x64 Printer - HP LaserJet 3015 attached to Windows 2003 server thru the local port (not a network printer) Possible compatibility issue: Windows Vista Home Premium can not be a member of domain system and x64 based system could not install the driver on x32 based system like Windows XP and Windows 2003 Work around: I've tried every method that I could make and failed to add the printer into Vista environment. I opened the network environment and make the domain computers to be displayed on Vista - set the primary DNS suffix as the domain name and just keep the default workgroup name as WORKGROUP. Add the Vista host name to the DNS entry on the DNS server (you may not want to know this much of details), but if you want to see other computers from your Vista network environment, this is the way. 1. Download the x64 printer driver from the company's site and install it as like the printer is attached to the local port (be sure that you do not select the 'Add a network, wireless or Buletooth printer'. You need to select the 'Add a local printer' option once after you selected 'Add Printer'. 2. From the 'Choose a printer port' option, check the 'Create a new port' option and select the 'Local Port' as a type of port. 3. From the Port Name, provide your shared printer name something like, '\\host name\shared printer name'. From example, '\\192.168.1.100\hp3015'. Be sure that your printer attached to domain is shared and share name is correct. 4. Select the printer driver for your printer from the 'Install the printer driver' area. 5. Provide the printer name and Vistall will start to install the printer driver. Because this printer is using the local port - even it's not a real local port - you need to decide to share the installed printer or not to share from the next screen. Provide share name if you want to share this printer setting with other x64 based system. The way in here is something like the fake that we used to in old Windows 3.x or Windows 95. 6. Test print To find out this method, it takes me a little while but it works perfectly on Vista system. Try it!
