Default Acronis True Image cannot launch the backup archive - password is required

Acronis True Image Cannot launch the backup archive with the "Password is required" window

Even you did not set up the password for tib backup archive file but Acronis True Image shows the window "Password is required", you may reinstall the product to resolve the issue

This article maybe applied to:
  • Acronis True Image 11 Home
  • Acronis True Image Home 2009
  • Acronis True Image Echo Server for Windows
  • Acronis True Image Echo Workstation
  • Acronis True Image Echo Enterprise Server
  • Acronis True Image for Microsoft Windows Small Business Server
Symptoms
  1. Using Acronis True Image that is not password-protected backup archive;
  2. In Windows you put in the correct password when trying to mount, explore or restore the backup archive;
  3. Acronis True Image errors out with a message similar to the following one:

Cause
There should be certain problem that cause this problem, but there is nothing known yet. The following could be a cause of this problem.
  • Certain DLL components did not install properly or broken.
  • Acronis installed more than 2 times over the existing installation.
  • Operating system recovered by using the backup archive.
  • Registry information changed
Solution
  1. Uninstall Acronis True Image and all its components through Add or Remove Programs (Start -> Control Panel);
  2. Remove the /Program Files/Common Files/Acronis folder;
  3. Open Windows Registry Editor (Start -> Run -> regedit) and remove the following subkey:
    • Windows 32 bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Acronis
    • Windows 64 bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Acronis
  4. Reboot the machine;
  5. Reinstall Acronis True Image.
(If you installed other Acronis product, you need to be careful when you remove the above items from registry and folders. The result would be unexpectable for other Acronis product. So, be careful if you are installing other Acronis products).

More information

Since the issue is Windows specific, as a workaround you may restore the backup archive from Acronis Bootable Media.

Default Re: Acronis True Image cannot launch the backup archive - password is required

Based on my test regarding the "password is required" window pop-up during the launching the tib Acronis archive file, it seems like it's trying to use invalid or old version Acronis True Image Backup Archive Explorer driver.

Definitely reinstalling the s/w should be a solution to fix the problem. But in this case, Acronis did not do a good job to clean up the old Acronis True Image Backup Archive Explorer driver. If you reinstall or remove the Acronis True Image s/w, the Acronis True Image Backup Archive Explorer would be there without removed.

During the installation or reinstallation, you may see the below screen to get your new driver installation confirmation.

As many of you already know about this, this message is to get your confirmation to install new driver into your system. See the date published of this driver. Its version date is year 2007.

To check the current driver version that is already installed in your system, go to the Device Manager (Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager), and expand the Acronis Devices. There should be one or more drivers installed.

If you see more than one driver, then check the individual driver version and remove the old drivers. If you have only one driver, then check the any updated driver is available or remove and reinstall the driver using the Acronis installation disk. By doing this, the "password is required" problem should be resolved.
